What Is Cocking Aid?

Cocking Aid: A rope or crank device that reduces the effort needed to draw the string.

Cocking aids include rope cockers and integrated or detachable cranks. They reduce felt effort and help draw the string evenly, which matters for consistent accuracy.

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific device and crossbow, and do not use one that is not rated for your crossbow.

Why Cocking Aid matters

A cocking aid reduces the effort of drawing the string and, just as important, draws it evenly. An uneven draw pulls the string off-centre, which affects accuracy and wears the string.

Cocking aids come in two main forms: rope cockers, which use pulleys to reduce felt effort, and cranks, which mechanise the draw. Each has trade-offs in speed, size and cost.

How to read it on a spec sheet

  • Check whether a cocking aid is included or sold separately, and whether it is rated for your crossbow’s draw weight.
  • Compare felt effort as well as time to cock. A crank can be slower but far easier on the shooter.

Common mistakes

  • Using a cocking aid that is not intended for your crossbow.
  • Cocking by hand without a device on a crossbow that is too heavy to draw evenly.
