What Is Limb?

Limb: One of the two flexing arms at the front of the crossbow that store energy when drawn.

Limbs flex as the string is drawn and release that stored energy to propel the bolt. Crossbow limbs are usually made from fiberglass, carbon or composite materials.

Limb design differs between recurve crossbows, where the limb tips carry the string directly, and compound crossbows, where cams and cables are attached to the limb tips.

Why Limb matters

Limbs are the part of the crossbow doing the work. They flex when the string is drawn and return that stored energy to the bolt, so their material, geometry and condition define much of what the crossbow can do.

Limb design also drives maintenance. Recurve limbs are comparatively simple. Compound limbs carry cams and cables, and limb or cam work should be done by qualified technicians where the manufacturer requires it.

How to read it on a spec sheet

  • Look at the limb material and construction (fiberglass, carbon or composite) but avoid reading too much into marketing names.
  • Check warranty terms for limbs. Manufacturers often specify limb coverage separately from other parts.
  • Inspect limbs regularly for cracks, splinters or delamination, and stop using the crossbow if you find damage.

Common mistakes

  • Continuing to shoot with a cracked or damaged limb. It can fail without warning.
  • Attempting repairs or adjustments that the manufacturer says require a technician.
